Intermittent Crash

Greetings and salutations, all.

Before I delve into the actual problem, a bit of background. I have been running Windows XP for a while now, but at some stage decided to an upgrade install of Vista Business over the top. (For DX10) This was working fine until I received a notification to update to Service Pack 1. I did so and at that point my entire system became unbootable. In Safe Mode / after a Repair from the OS DVD - it would crash everytime the RAID driver initialized.

I had no option but to re-install Vista. The only software I’ve installed subsequent to that has been Thunderbird and Firefox. Because I have different drives for different collections of functionality, I thought it would be possible to simply run Lord of the Rings from my old installation folder.

Well, once I’d installed .NET 1.1 and the Service Pack it did. But then I was seeing random crashes. It would either give me an access violation

So, I deleted the Lord of the Rings folder, uninstalled .NET and re-installed from the original disks. This reinstalled .NET as well. (Good) Then began the long, 8+ hour patching process. Once that was done I started playing again.

Except, the problem is still there. So, I thought I would take step two, expecting the Book 13 installer to be more Vista compatible perhaps. So, I bit the bullet and went for a download of the Book 13 installer. All 7.something odd GB of it. Once THAT download completed, I uninstalled and reverted the system back to a clean state. (Only Thunberbird + Firefox installed)

Net result? The very same problem.

What I notice before it occurs is:

1. You cannot talk to NPCs anymore. They respond audibly with their greeting, but their interface display will not open.

2. Random assets will move around. For example, the horse at the barter vendor in Tinnundir would port across the steps, jump halfway through the door, jump back next to the vendor and then the client crashes.

3. Attempts to exit the game once NPCs become inaccessible result in the crash immediately. This is either using the menu interface or pressing Alt-F4. I’ve not tried Task Manager yet.

4. This does not happen in the wild. I’ve only seen this happen in towns and settlements and it usually occurs when interacting with a NPC or when zoning into, for example, Esteldin’s craft hall.

I’m attaching a DXDiag, if that would be of use.

How do damage types work?

I’m only a level 20 Champion, so I haven’t gotten any weapons that do anything other than Common damage, but I see plenty of them that do Light damage, Ancient Dwarfmake, Fire, etc.

Is there a link somewhere, or can someone list what exactly is weak/strong against each type of damage? I guess there’s obvious ones like frost monsters being weak against fire damage, wights against light damage (?) etc., but Ancient Dwarfmake damage I have no clue. Being a Champ, I assume weapon damage type is important for me to know.

And what level should I start worrying about getting different types of weapons?

How do I take my mind off it…

My girlfriend is moving back to Sweden in two weeks, and I feel absolutly horrible. We just got back from a week long stay in Ireland, and the night I got back, I cried myself to sleep…

Is there anyway I can take my mind off how much little time we have left together?

It’s just, when she isn’t around, I feel so…empty…

Thanks for any advice you can give…

Help! Need to reinstall, have no discs!

I installed originally off a buddy pass over a year ago, from someone I worked with who I no longer have contact with. I need to reinstall the game, but I do no have discs. I have an active account, so is there any way to legally obtain discs from Turbine or something so I don’t have to wait 3 days for my limited bandwidth to download the full client? I live about 30 minutes from Turbine, and would be more than willing to drive up there if that’s what it takes!

Takes too long?

I laugh. For real. Really laugh when people complain about things in this game taking too long. I was just complaining last week that it’s been going too fast; way too fast.

What is with people in this game and wanting things right now?

People act like things in this game take too long, when really they don’t. I’ve only been playing a little over a month and well, I honestly don’t even see myself being able to play for 1 year to get my money’s worth on my lifetime account.

Am I in the minority, that I actually want things to move a bit slower?

Two Month Weekend Coffee

Its the only thing my brain could come up with. This weekend spans May and June :)

The coffee house door opens, and tired looking redhaired woman stumbles through the door, followed by dark haired man. She glances around at the place, quiet today but still staffed with a few busy looking chinchillas. In the corner she notices a slight dark haired elf, strumming a small harp.

"I was told I could find a beverage here that will help refresh my energy" A chinchilla bustles up to her, handing her a cup with a dark steaming brew inside. She takes a sip and lets out a small sigh. " I shall have to bring my sisters and brother here, I am sure they would enjoy the respite"

Finding a comfortable chair, she sits to enjoy the tunes the minstrel is playing.
